Apple is selling a $19 fix for iPhone Duo creasing

Apple has done as much as it can to minimize the visibility of the crease on the iPhone Duo, including multiple shifting display layers and a matte nano-texture surface that reduces glare and makes the crease less visible. But physics is what it is, and you just can’t fold and unfold a display thousands of times without any visible crease forming. The good news is, Apple has another solution to help mitigate that: a replaceable outer layer.

Speaking to @angietutorials on TikTok, Apple’s VP of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron said, “the matte layer does a really nice job of, I’ll say minimizing the crease, but there’s a cover layer on top and we’ve done a significant amount of engineering work to help that wear in as long a manner as we can, to make sure you get the most out of that layer’s performance. It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.”

The AppleCare service and repair site has already been updated with the costs of some repairs for the iPhone Duo with AppleCare+, and it looks like it’s only $19 to get the cover layer replaced. Just note, the top cover layer is not user replaceable like a screen protector would be, though, so don’t go peeling off your iPhone Duo display by yourself.

Apple does not yet list the cost of this service if you don’t have AppleCare+, but it is common for outer glass repairs or replacements to cost $100-150 more without coverage.
