A cyclist was struck by a car in a hit-and-run along Broad Street in Philadelphia early Sunday morning, and witnesses said police never arrived at the scene despite several calls for help.
Dashcam video captured the crash along the 5400 block of Broad Street in North Philadelphia, across the street from Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital.
Adam Maiale and his girlfriend were inside the rideshare vehicle that recorded the crash. Maiale said they immediately tried to help the injured cyclist.
“I’ve never seen anything like that before. Everybody processes things differently. I was just shocked and just wanted to get the guy help,” Maiale said.
Maiale said witnesses were able to move the cyclist out of the traffic lane before an ambulance arrived.
“We were able to get him out of the lane. The ambulance came quickly. We were right across the street from Einstein hospital fortunately. it’s just sad somebody could hit somebody like that and just drive away with no remorse,” Maiale said.
Maiale said the cyclist had a gash on his head but was alert and talking. The cyclist could not remember being struck, according to Maiale.
An ambulance arrived in about 10 minutes, Maiale said, but police did not.
“Both my girlfriend and I called, a guy Derrick called as well. All of us were getting delayed times— like nobody was picking up — nobody is picking up for a few minutes at least,” Maiale said.
“We waited there, the cops didn’t come for 45 minutes to an hour. They never came. Unfortunately, we had to leave because it was 1:45 in the morning and we had to get home,” Maiale said.
Philadelphia police told NBC10 they are investigating the crash and said an orange or possibly burgundy car left the scene.

Maiale believes he has information that could help police find the driver responsible.
“I just wanted to make sure whatever justice can happen. At that point. at least we get him the help he needed. But there’s more to it than that guy being safe and make sure he’s healthy again. There’s also a justice element here. Everybody there was trying to help. We were just not getting any cooperation,” Maiale said.
NBC10 asked Philadelphia police why officers did not respond to the crash, noting that the 35th Police District is less than a mile away on Broad Street.
Police did not provide an explanation and said they had no further information about the case at the time.
There was also no update on the cyclist’s condition.
